Over the past couple of years, I have been asked many times how businesses and professionals can use social networking. Sometimes, I am asked if there is really any value in it, or is it just a way to waste time. I usually say something like “It probably doesn’t have any value for you. Disruptive innovation in business technology usually doesn’t lead to better results. The telephone, computers, email, the Internet — all passing fads that aren’t going to work out.” OK, a bit sarcastic perhaps, but when said with a knowing smile it does get someone’s attention.
So once we get past that, I encourage people to:
- Understand what the main social networking platforms are today: LinkedIn, Facebook and twitter.
- Think about how you create value for your customers today.
- Develop strategy and tactics to to apply social networking to your business.
Here’s a copy of slides I use to backdrop conversations around social networking.
